World Environment Day

Small Steps Green Gains

Celebrated on the 5th of June every year, World Environment Day for the Gajera Trust bears significant importance as we have included Green Education in the core curriculum of the schools under the management of the Trust. It has been a year since we adopted the course in tandem with the UNSDGs and we have noticed a significant change in the attitude of young people towards the environment.

In all the schools managed by the Trust, various programs have been initiated to create awareness among children about the need to go green. Trees were planted and adopted with a pledge to look after them until maturity. By creating green awareness; we can hope to reverse climate change successfully, as the younger generation is more motivated about sustainability as it is their future that is at stake. Green education will make them understand that the earth is not a non-living thing but a living-breathing organism that demands as much care as a human need. We cannot just take from her all the time. We must also do what is necessary to improve our well-being as a healthy environment will help in improving the quality of our life.

The programs we undertook were a kind of a ‘connect children to the realities of climate change. The purpose was to prepare children for a future where resources will not run out, where the earth will not turn into a scorching desert and where no one is left behind in the ladder of progress. We believe we’ve succeeded in doing so to a large extent as the young are now taking interest in starting a terrace garden or of taking care of a plant. The beginning has been made and we need only to keep going at it. And before we realize it, the acorn we have planted today will turn into a giant oak. But stringent measures must be adopted to save our planet from the havoc created by climate change.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and one another”. We must pledge to contribute in every way possible by adopting an environmentally friendly lifestyle to conserve the environment and save Mother Earth.
